The length of a rectangle is 5 cm more than the width. What are the dimensions of the rectangle if the perimeter is 34 cm?

Let us suppose that the width of the rectangle = b cm

So, length (l) of the rectangle = (b + 5) cm

Perimeter of the rectangle = 2 x (l + b)

34 = 2 x {(b + 5) + b}

34 = 2 x (2b + 5)

34 = 4b + 10

34 - 10 = 4b

24 = 4b    [swap both sides]

4b = 24

b = = 6

Therefore, width = 6 cm and length = (b + 5) = 6 + 5 = 11 cm
