The formula for gear ratio is NA/NB
but in the use of gear  for gain in torq,the number of teeth in the driven gear should be more than the number of teeth in the driving wheel.In this case the gear ratio will be less than 1.how can this be used for the gain in torq?

It is true that gear ratio is NA/NB
But, gain in torque is NB/NA (Refer the text book)
 
Hence, if NA/NB < 1
NB/NA > 1 and there is gain in torque.
