Energy is always lost during its flow through the various trophic levels. This lost energy cannot be replenished. Thus the energy flow is unidirectional. On the other hand, the substances are never lost in the biogeochemical cycle. They are only recycled.
The nitrogen cycle is supposed to be an ideal cycle as the amount of nitrogen remains constant and during the cycle, no nitrogen is lost.
