Expert Answer
- The Earth is not lieing stationary, it is involving around the Sun in an elliptical orbit.
- Had it been stationary, then the probability of the Earth falling on to the Sun due to gravity would have been higher.
- The Sun's gravitational pull is used to provide centripetal force in circular (elliptical) motion whereas, the mass of the Earth provides
the centrifugal force in this revolution.
- So there is almost a balance between the centrifugal and the centripetal force that prevents the Earth from collapsing onto the Sun due to its gravitational pull.
