The diameter of an iron wire is 120mm.If the speed of transverse wave in the wire be 50ms^-1.What is the tension in the wire?The density of iron is 7.7*10^3kg m^-3.

Velocity of transverse waves, v = begin mathsize 12px style square root of T over mu end root space space m divided by s space end style, hence Tension T = v2 μ Newton , where μ is linear mass density (kg/m)
linear mass density, μ = density×crosssection area = 7700×(π/4)×120×120×10-6  ≈ 87 kg/m
 
Tension = 50×50×87 = 217500 Newton
