By the beginning of the 19th century, individuals like Thomas Arnold, who is considered to be the founder of the modern public school system, popularised the view that team sports were not just games; but tools of teaching young minds the importance of discipline, hierarchy, codes oh honourable conduct and leadership qualities. These values and qualities were seen to be absolutely essential for the build up and running of the British Empire.
