The statement "battle of Waterloo was won on the playing fields of Eton" meant that Britain's military success was based on the values that were taught to school boys in its public schools.
Eton was one of the most famous and prestigious of the public schools in England. Supposedly, public schools like Eton were the institutions that trained young English lads for careers in fields like the military, civil services and the church – the three great pillars of the British Empire. By the beginning of the 19th century, individuals like Thomas Arnold, who is considered to be the founder of the modern public school system, popularised the view that team sports were not just games; but tools of teaching young minds the importance of discipline, hierarchy, codes oh honourable conduct and leadership qualities. These values and qualities were seen to be absolutely essential for the build up and running of the British Empire.
