The British intervened in the Maratha power struggle when Raghunath Rao appealed to the English East India Company to intervene on his behalf. The British agreed on the condition that if he took over the Peshwa throne, he would hand over the two important port areas of Salsetteand Bassein. The rival claimant to Peshwai was the infant Madhav Rao II. Under the ablegovernorship of Nana Phadnavis, forces of Madhav Rao II’s forces defeated the British. But the Company would not accept defeat and sent fresh forces from Bengal. However, even after four years of war, no satisfactory result emerged as the British were also fighting the Second Mysore War at the time. Finally, the war came to an end with the Treaty of Salbai which was negotiated in 1782.
