- Legislative
- The President summons and prorogues the Parliament. Also, every year, he/she addresses the opening of the session of the Parliament.
- During non-functioning of the Parliament, it can issue ordinances which are temporary laws passed by the President.
- It has the power to dissolve the Lok Sabha and order fresh elections.
- During a deadlock, it can call for a joint session of both the Houses of the Parliament.
- Military
- He is considered as the Supreme Commander of the Defence Forces.
- Has the power to declare peace and war.
- Represents India in international conferences.
- Important treatises are made in his name.
- Executive
- He appoints the leader of the majority party as the Prime Minister.
- Union Ministers are appointed by him on advice of the Prime Minister.
- Appoints the Judges of the Supreme Court and High Courts.
- Appoints and removes high dignitaries of the State. It also includes Attorney General, Auditor General of India etc.
- Financial
- The budget is presented in his name in the Parliament.
- Only after his permission can Money bills be introduced in the Parliament.
- In case of unforeseen expenditure, he can grant advance from the Contingency fund.
- Judicial
- He has the power to grant pardon or reduce or suspend the sentence of the convict. He can also pardon the death sentence if he sees it fit.
- He is not answerable to any court other than being impeached by the Parliament.
- Emergency
- He can declare a National Emergency if there is a threat to the security of the country.
- If there is a breakdown of administrative machinery, President’s rule is imposed in the State under Article 356.
- Financial Emergency can be declared by him when financial stability of the country is threatened.
