  1. Legislative
    1. The President summons and prorogues the Parliament. Also, every year, he/she addresses the opening of the session of the Parliament.
    2. During non-functioning of the Parliament, it can issue ordinances which are temporary laws passed by the President.
    3. It has the power to dissolve the Lok Sabha and order fresh elections.
    4. During a deadlock, it can call for a joint session of both the Houses of the Parliament.
  2. Military
    1. He is considered as the Supreme Commander of the Defence Forces.
    2. Has the power to declare peace and war.
    3. Represents India in international conferences.
    4. Important treatises are made in his name.
  3. Executive
    1. He appoints the leader of the majority party as the Prime Minister.
    2. Union Ministers are appointed by him on advice of the Prime Minister.
    3. Appoints the Judges of the Supreme Court and High Courts.
    4. Appoints and removes high dignitaries of the State. It also includes Attorney General, Auditor General of India etc.
  4. Financial
    1. The budget is presented in his name in the Parliament.
    2. Only after his permission can Money bills be introduced in the Parliament.
    3. In case of unforeseen expenditure, he can grant advance from the Contingency fund.
  5. Judicial
    1. He has the power to grant pardon or reduce or suspend the sentence of the convict. He can also pardon the death sentence if he sees it fit.
    2. He is not answerable to any court other than being impeached by the Parliament.
  6. Emergency
    1. He can declare a National Emergency if there is a threat to the security of the country.
    2. If there is a breakdown of administrative machinery, President’s rule is imposed in the State under Article 356.
    3. Financial Emergency can be declared by him when financial stability of the country is threatened.
