Apical Meristem

Located at the growing points of the stem as the shoot apical meristem and at the tips of roots as the root apical meristem.

• Enables the root and stem to grow in length.
• During the formation of the primary plant body, some regions of this meristem form dermal tissues, ground tissues and vascular tissues.

Intercalary Meristem

Located at internodes or stem regions between the places at which leaves attach, and at leaf bases, especially of certain monocotyledons.

• It helps in elongation of plant organs.
• It helps to erect the loosen stems of plants.
• It helps in the regeneration of parts removed by grazing herbivores.

Lateral Meristem/Cambium

Present laterally (on the sides) on the roots and stem. It is situated parallel to the longitudinal axis below the bark.

• The girth and width or diameter or thickness of the stem or root increases because of the lateral meristem.
