Expert Answer
Let us calculate the inter-moleculer spacing in water using the following data
water molecule size = 2.75 A° , water density =1g/c.c ,
1 mole of water = 18 gm , i.e., 18 gm of water contains 6.023×1023 molecules.
no.of molecules in 1 g of water = 6.023×1023 / 18 = 3.35×1022 molecules
volume occupied by 1 molecule = 1/ ( 3.35×1022 ) cm3 ≈30×10-24 cm3
if we assum above volume as a cube, then side of cube ≈ 3.1×10-8 cm = 3.1 A°
since water molecule size 2.75 A°, moleculer spacing = 0.35 A° = 3.5 nm
Hence we can assume inter moleculer spacing is around 3 nm ( 3×10-9 m )
Inter-moleculer spacing in solid is less than that of liquid.
Inter-moleculer spacing in gases is greater than that of liquid.
