Echo depth sounding is the technique of measuring depth of ocean using sound waves. Time taken for the sound wave from the time of transmission to the time of reception is measured. Using the speed of sound in ocean water and half of the measured time the depth of ocean is determined. Ultrasonic sound waves are used for this purpose because ultrasonic sound(frequency > 20kHz) deviates less while travelling in water.
