Let AB be the rod of length 4 m . It is supported by two knife edges as shown in figure.
 
Let each point of support is at a distance x m from centre of mass, symmetrically on both sides of centre of mass.
 
let us consider g = 10 m/s2 for convenience.
 
As shown in figure 500 N force is acting downwards at centre of mass due to weight of rod.
 
To balance a 300 N load at extreme end A,  we have ,   500 x = 300 (2-x)   or  x = 0.75 m
 
Hence maximum distance for each support from respective end,  2-x = 2- 0.75 = 1.25 m
