Since the ball return in 12 seconds, it has taken 6 seconds to reach maximum height.
 
let us use the equation of motion, " v = u-gt " for upward motion in gravitational field,
where u and v are initial and final velocity respectively.g is acceleration due to gravity and t is time taken to travel.
here final velocity is zero when the ball has reached maximum height.
 
hence we have u = g×t = 9.8×6 = 58.8 m/s
