If a current carrying wire of length l is placed in a magnetic field B, it is subjected to a force i× B as shown in figure. Balancing this force against the force due to gravity is possible, if the direction of current and magnetic field is chosen as shown in figure.
 
if current is flowing from East to west and magnetic field is direced from south to North, with proper magnatiude of current and magnetic field, the gravitation force mg can be balanced.
 
Similarly if current is flowing from west to east and magnetic field is direced from North  to South, with proper magnatiude of current and magnetic field, the gravitation force mg can be balanced.
