Expert Answer
Let x cm is the distance of object in front of lens-1 of focal length 3 cm.
if v is the image distance, we have ..............(1)
hence magnification m1 of first lense is given by, m1 = -v/u = 3/(x-3) ....................(2)
If L is the distance between lenses , then object distance for second lens-2 of focal length 5 cm is given by
..............................(3)
If v' is the image distance for second lens, then we have
Hence .................................(4)
magnification m2 of the second lens is given by, m2 = v' /(L - v' ) = ...................(5)
Overall magnification M = m1m2 = ........................(6)
To make the overall magnification M independent of x, we put (dM/dx) = 0
hence
Overall magnififcation M is obtained using eqn.(6) with L = 8 cm and it is -5/3
