Rest mass is the mass of an object when it is at rest. Relativistic mass of the object is when it is moving with a speed comparable to the speed of light.

According to the theory of relativity, an object’s mass is not constant. It increases with increase in speed. The mass of an object in relativistic terms is given as

begin mathsize 14px style straight m equals fraction numerator straight m subscript 0 over denominator square root of 1 minus begin display style straight v squared over straight c squared end style end root end fraction Here comma space straight m subscript 0 space is space the space rest space mass space of space the space object straight m space is space the space relativistic space mass space at space speed space straight v comma space and space straight c space is space the space speed space of space light. end style

Now, when the speed of object is much smaller than c, then we have

begin mathsize 14px style straight m equals fraction numerator straight m subscript 0 over denominator square root of 1 minus 0 end root end fraction equals straight m subscript 0 end style

Hence, we consider rest mass only for any object. It is only when the object moves with speeds comparable to speed of light, the relativistic mass m is considered.
