sir,                                                                                                                                                                                               in our first chapter we have one question..                                                                                                                                   1)The eletrostatics force on a sphere of charge 0.4microcoulomb due to another small sphere of charge -0.8 microcoulomb in air is 0.2 N.(a) what is the distance between the two spheres?                                                                                                                     (b)what is the force on the second sphere due to the first?                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                             this is the question sir but in all study materials they have not taken -0.8 in the solution. why they have not taken the value as -0.8 microcoulomb??

Hi Theekshaung,

The negative sign indicates the direction of the force. It does not influence the magnitude of the force.

Hence, by substituting only the positive value of charge as 0.8 and not -0.8 the magnitude will be found.

Hence, the negative sign is neglected.
