sir, A microscope is focused on a mark on a piece of paper and then a slab of glass of thickness 3cm and refractive index 1.5 is placed over the mark. How should the microscope be moved to get the mark in focus again.

Hi Vishesh Gupta,

We know that Refractive index = begin mathsize 14px style fraction numerator Real space depth space over denominator space apparent space depth space end fraction end style

apparent depth = begin mathsize 14px style fraction numerator 3 over denominator 1.5 end fraction end style = 2 cm 


So due to refraction the image gets shifted upwards by 1 cm. 

Thus, the microscope has to be moved up by 1 cm to get the mark in focus again
