Never use coloured pencils for drawings diagrams. Diagrams should be drawn and labelled only with the help of a grey pencil and not even pen.

Tips for drawing diagrams:

  • List all the information you need to include as a reminder in some spare space. For example, if you had to draw a plant cell, writing "cell membrane, cytoplasm, nucleus, mitochondria, ribosomes, vacuole, cell wall, chloroplasts", will help you remember to include all of the information for full marks, and also help you label your diagram.
  • Understand the size of the diagram.
  • Use good stationery to draw and label the diagram.
  • Sketch out your diagram in pencil.
  • Leave margins for labelling.
  • Remember to use a ruler for straight lines, particularly if you are drawing a graph.
  • Pay maximum attention to labelling and referencing.
