Macronutrients are nutrients required in large amounts. The main function of macronutrients is to provide energy, counted as calories. There are three broad classes of macro-nutrients: proteins, carbohydrates, and fats.
In case of plants, the essential elements utilised by plants in relatively large quantities are called macronutrients. These include nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, calcium, magnesium and sulphur.
