Slave trade refers to the kidnapping or purchasing of mainly Africans by the European traders. The slaves were taken to the Americas or in different European colonies to work on plantation and mining.

  • The French Revolution was a landmark event in the history of the world. The king was overthrown. The Jacobins after the revolution granted equality and liberty to all their citizens. They also abolished slavery in the French colonies.
  • Since the 17th century, the French colonies in the Caribbean- Martinique, Guadeloupe and San Domingo supplied commodities such as tobacco, indigo, sugar and coffee. Since Europeans required labourers to work in the fields, a triangular slave trade started between Europe, Africa and the Americas.
  • French merchants sailed from the ports of Bordeaux or Nantes to the African coast, where they bought slaves from local chieftains. These slaves were transported by ships to the French colonies in cruel and inhuman ways.
  • Throughout the 18th century, slavery was hardly criticised in France. The national Assembly did not pass any laws for abolishing slavery as it feared the backlash from the industrialists and businessmen. It was finally the Convention which in 1794 legislated to free all slaves in the French colonies.
  • However, Napoleon after he occupied power, reintroduced slavery.  Slavery was finally abolished in French colonies in 1848. However, the condition of slaves still did not improve. They lacked basic education, sanitation facilities and decent shelter.
