Answer:
Ring nitration of m-xylene can be achieved easily.
81 % H2SO4 and 10 % HNO3 are added to 1 mole m-xylene at 30 °C for 1 hr to get 98 % mono-nitrated m-xylene product.
 
In the nitration of m-xylene, there are two sites which are ortho to one methyl group and para to the other mthyl group (double reinforcement).
 
2,4-dimethyl-1-nitrobenzene is the final product.
