Expert Answer
The element x has atomic number 20, so it has 20 protons and 20 electrons. So, the electronic configuration will be 1s2 2s2 2p6 3s2 3p6 4s2
This suggests the element belongs to group 2.
It can easily lose the outermost 2 electrons to form a +2 ion. Chloine on the other hand needs one more electron to form its octet. Therefore, two chlorides can form bond with this +2 ion. So, it will form bond with two chlorides.
