Question:A block (B) is attached to two unstretched springs S1 and S2 with spring constants k and 4k respectively (see figure I). The other ends are attached to identical supports M1 and M2 not attached to the walls. The springs and supports have negligible mass. There is no friction anywhere. The block displaced towards wall 1 by a small distance x (figure II) and released. The block returns and moves a maximum distance y towards wall 2. Displacements x and y are measured with respect to the equilibrium position of the block B. The ratio of y/x is

Solution:Please refer to the below solution.
begin mathsize 12px style The space equation space of space equilibrium space is
1 half kx squared equals fraction numerator begin display style 1 end style over denominator begin display style 2 end style end fraction cross times 4 straight k cross times straight y squared
straight x squared equals 4 straight y squared
straight x equals 2 straight y
straight y over straight x equals 1 half
Therefore comma space the space equation space bevelled straight y over straight x space for space equilibirum space is space bevelled 1 half end style
