The following steps will lead to the answers to the query:

1) For the first 40 m: u = 0, g = 9.8 and s = 40 m. So, use v2 = u2 + 2gs to find v. You will get v = 28 m/s

2) Use the value of v and the equation v = u + gt to find t1 taken for covering 40 m. You will get t1 = 2.9 s

3) Now, for the decelerated journey: you have v = 3 m/s, u = 28 m/s, a = -2 m/s2. Use the equation v2 = u2 -2as to find s. You will get 194 m.

4) Calculate total distance of aeroplane as 40 + 194 = 234 m

5) Use v = u - gt to find t2. You will get t2 = 12.5 s.

6) Find total time as t = t1 + t2 = 15.4 s.
