Working of gears in pendulum clock:

In a clock, the gear system is used to obtain gain in torque. In it, the gear wheel with which the second arm is attached has 120 teeth and it is rotated by the motion of a pendulum of time period 2·0 s.

The second arm of the clock attached to its shaft makes one complete rotation in 60 s and thus it measures the time in second.

This gear wheel is connected to a gear train with ratio 1:60 and the minute arm is attached to the shaft of last gear so that the last gear moves one tooth corresponding to the one rotation of the gear wheel of the second arm.

Now the wheel of the minute arm is connected to another gear train with ratio 1:12 and the hour arm is attached to the shaft of last gear so that for one complete rotation of the gear wheel of minute arm, the gear of hour arm moves by one tooth.

A watch also has the same type of gear system with the only difference that in a watch, the gear wheel of the second arm gets rotated by the unwinding of the coiled spring, while in a clock it gets rotated by a pendulum.
