CBSE Class 10 Answered

Q. In a village, 60% registered voters cast their votes in the election. Only two candidates (A and B) were contesting the election. A won the election by 600 votes. Had B received 40% more votes, the result would have been a tie. How many registered voters are there in the village.

Let B got x number of votes.
→ Number of votes received by A = x + 600

If B received 40% more votes the result would have been a tie.
B = 1.4x

→ 1.4x = x + 600 - 0.4x
→ 0.8x = 600
→      x = 750

Number of votes received by A = x + 600 = 750 + 600= 1350

According to the condition in the question, we get
60y/100 = 1350 + 750
→ y = 3500
So, there are 3500 registered voters in the village.
