ICSE Class 10 Answered
Q. (i)
Why about 40% of nitrogen and hydrogn remain nnonreative in the Haber's process.
(ii) How Ammonia gas is separated from the mixture.
(iii). Why the separated mixture of Nitrogen and Hydroge recompressed before
recycling.
(iv). Why external heating is stopped soon after the nitrogen and Hydrogen start
reacting chemically.
(v).Name the principle which helps to get better yield of Amonia.

Thanks for asking us a question in Ask the Expert section of TopperLearning.com.
In case of multiple questions within a query, please post each question individually and let us know where you are getting stuck so that we would be able to explain things better.
Solution for your first query,
Different factors are responsible for the percentage yield of the product like temperature, pressure etc.
For any given temperature the yield of ammonia increases as the pressure increases and for any given pressure, the yield goes down as the temperature increases.
The chemicals are prepared taking into account economic considerations.
When a chemical is manufactured, the optimum conditions used are the ones that can give the lowest cost. These conditions are not necessarily the ones that give the fastest reaction or highest percentage yield of that chemical. For example:
- The rate of reaction should be high enough to make enough product each day
- The percentage yield should be high enough to make enough product each day.
- A low percentage yield could be accepted if unreacted started materials can be recycled as they are in the Haber’s process. Nitrogen and hydrogen can be used again for the manufacturing of ammonia.
