Expert Answer
The Bourbon king of France, Louis XVI was an extremely autocratic and weak willed king who led a life of obscene luxury. This led to a lot of disenchantment among the masses who then were leading life of extreme poverty and widespread hunger. This was compounded by the fact that Queen Marie Antoinette too was completely unaware of people's miseries and the Nobles and the clergy did not pay taxes. The royalty was seen as a symbol of the unjust ancient regime and hence pushed the French people towards an insurrection.
