CBSE Class 9 Answered
Jerome
Jerome is the narrator of the book. He identifies himself as just “J” in the novel. He is the central character and the voice of reason in the novel “Three Men in a Boat”. He is a young man who lives and works in London. He is comical and fun-loving. Jerome stands in stark contrast to his other two friends as he is seemingly the sensible one out of the three. Jerome also highlights his own “reasonable nature” by contrasting his friends’ quirky personalities with his own. He like his other two friends is a hypochondriac. He seems to be making fun of his friends’ antics throughout the novel. Jerome loves literature and spends his time fantasing about brave knights and their valor. His tendency to daydreaming often lands him in trouble. Though he jests about his friends’ eccentric nature, he himself is quite quirky. Whenever he is reminded of his own conceit, he does not shy away from indulging in self-effacing humour.
