Figure shows the uniform meter scale rests on a knife edge placed at 60 cm mark.

Weight of the scale W acts downwards at centre of gravity of scale which is at 50 cm mark
to give anticlockwise moment with respect to knife edge.

To counter balance this anticlockwise moment, 10 g mass is suspened at the right most edge (100 cm mark)
to give clockwise moment.

Anticlockwise moment of weight of scale W about knife edge = W×10   gf-cm
Clockwise moment of suspended 10g mass about knife edge = 10×40  gf-cm

At equilibrium, anticlockwise moment exactly balances clockwise moment. Hence  W×10 = 10×40  ..........(1)

from eqn.(1), we get weight of scale W = 40 gf   or  mass of scale = 40 g
