Hi,
- Valence bond theory was put forward by Heitler and London. According to this theory, during formation of bond between atoms, only the valence electrons from each bonded atom lose their identity. The other electrons remain unaffected and the formation of bond is accompanied by release of energy.
- The overlapping of orbitals results in the pairing of electrons.
- The greater the extent of overlapping, the stronger is the bond formed.
- The process of intermixing of the orbitals of slightly different energies so as to redistribute their energies resulting in the formation of new set of orbitals of equivalent energies and shape is called hybridization.
- Atomic orbitals used in different types of hybridization
