By replacing 12 litres of a solution from a beaker(containing a mixture of alcohol and water filled to the brim) by 12 litres of water, the concentration of alcogol drops from 18% to 15%, then find the capacity of the beaker (in litres).
Solution:
Let the capacity of the beaker be V.
The component of alcohol in the mixture is same as the sum of alcohol component in the mixture that has been taken out and alcohol component in the remaining mixture.
Therefore, we have
18% of V = 18% of 12 litres + 15% of V
3% of V = 18% of 12 litres
3V/100 = 18 x 12/100
V=72 litres
Hence, the capacity of the beaker is 72 litres.
