Expert Answer
i = 45°
r = 90º
n = sin i/ sin r
n = sin 45°/ sin 90°
Thus, n = 1/ √2
The ray of light is moving from denser to rarer medium
and when i = 45° r= 90°
This means critical angle, c = 45°
(i) Thus, when the ray of light is incident at angle of 50° with surface of paraffin i = 90° - 50° = 40°
i = 40°
This means i < c
Thus the ray of light will be partly reflected and partly refracted. Thus there will be strong refraction and weak reflection of light.
(ii) When ray of light is incident at angle of 30° with paraffin surface i = 90° - 30° = 60°
This means i > c
Thus, the ray of light will undergo total internal reflection and hence, no refracted ray is obtained in this case.
