Question: P and Q are two varieties of rice which are mixed in the ratio 3:5 and the mixture is then sold at Rs. 35 per kg making 25% in the process. If the first variety of rice costs Rs. 10 per kg more than the second variety, then find the cost of the second variety of rice (in Rs. per kg)?
Solution:
Let the cost price of second variety of rice = y per kg
Cost price of first variety of rice = (y+10) per kg
This mixture is sold at Rs. 35 per kg making 25% profit
Cost price of first variety of rice = (y+10) per kg
This mixture is sold at Rs. 35 per kg making 25% profit
Let the cost price of 1 kg of the mixture be Rs. x
Therefore,
Therefore,
x + 25x/100 = 35
125x/100 = 35
x = 28
Therefore, 1 kg of mixture contains 3/8 kg of first variety of rice and 5/8 kg of second variety of rice
(y+10)3/8 + 5y/8 = 28
3y+30+5y=28 x 8
8y+30=224
y=24.25
Hence, the cost of the second variety of rice is Rs. 24.25 per kg.
