Question: What is the sum of deviations of n variables from their mean?
Solution:
Let a1, a2, a3, ... an be n variables.
Let x be the mean of these n variables.
a1 + a2 + a3 + ... +an = nx ... (i)
Deviations of these n variables are given by: a1-x, a2-x, a3-x, .... an-x
Sum of deviations is
a1-x + a2-x + a3-x + .... + an-x
= (a1+a2+a3+...+an)-nx
= nx - nx ... From (i)
= 0
Thus, the sum of deviations of n variables from their mean is 0.
Hence, the answer is option D (None of these).
