Q: A vessel has 30 litres of solution of alcohol and water, having 80% alcohol. How many litres of the solution must be withdrawn from the vessel and replaced with water so that the vessel would have 60% alcohol?
Solution:
80% of 30 litres = (80 x 30)/100 = 24 litres
Which means there are 24 litres of alcohol.
60% of 30 litres = (60 x 30)/100 = 18 litres
Now, (24 - 18)litres = 6 litres
Thus, 6 litres of alcohol must be withdrawn and replaced with water so that the vessel would have 60% alcohol.
