Expert Answer
In Set-A, at each slit of double slit, incident waves are at same phase because both the slits are at equal distance from source slit.
Hence on screen, where at the meeting point of two waves emerging from double slits with angular position θ,
if path difference satisfies the condition sinθ = nλ , where n=0,1,2.. , we have constructive interference and get bright fringe.
If path difference satisfies the condition sinθ = (n+1/2)λ we get destructive interference and get dark fringe.
In Set-B, incident waves at each slit of double slit are not at same phase because one of the slit is close to the source slit by λ/2.
Hence on screen, where at the meeting point of two waves emerging from double slits with angular position θ,
if path difference satisfies the condition sinθ = nλ , where n=0,1,2.. , we have destructive interference and get dark fringe.
This happens because if we find the total path difference starting from source slit the total path difference becomes (n+1/2)λ.
Similarly, If path difference satisfies the condition sinθ = (n+1/2)λ we get constructive interference and get bright fringe.
Hence in the place of bright fringes occuring at set-A, we get dark fringes at set-B.
Similarly, in the place of dark fringes occuring at set-A, we get bright fringes at set-B.
