Story 1

The Lion and the Slave

Once upon a time, there was a man who was a slave to a very cruel man, who used to capture and take away men to be his slaves.

One day, the slave was able to run away from the master. He wandered into the desert in search of food and water, and entered into a cave thinking that it is unoccupied. He soon realised that it was a lion’s den and to his horror, he watched the lion appear from the dark end of the den. The slave gave himself up looking at the huge beast approaching him. However as soon as the lion came close to the slave, instead of pouncing at him, he lifted his paw and whined in pain and agony before falling on the ground.

The lion had a huge thorn embedded in the ball of the beast’s paw. At this point, the slave, instead of running away, removed the thorn and dressed the wound as well as he could, In course of time it healed up completely. The Lion's gratitude was unbounded and he looked upon the slave as his friend and they shared the cave for some time together. However, the slave, being a human, started craving for human contact, and bidding goodbye to the lion, came back to the city hoping for a new lease of life.

Unfortunately, he was recognised by the master’s men and carried off in chains to his former master. The master, who wanted to make an example of him, ordered for the slave to be thrown to the beasts at the next public spectacle in the theatre.

On the fatal day, the slave was brought chained in front of the whole town and thrown into the arena, and a lion was let loose in the space soon. To the amazement of the spectators, instead of the mauling the slave, the lion after one glance, embraced the slave and lay down at his feet with every expression of affection and delight! It was his old friend of the cave! The audience clamoured that the Slave's life should be spared: and the governor of the town, marvelling at such gratitude and fidelity in a beast, decreed that both should receive their liberty.

Story 2

The Wind and The Sun

Once upon a time on an autumn day, the sun and the wind had an argument over who is stronger. They continued to argue but couldn’t figure out how to reach to a conclusion to their problem.

Just then, they saw a traveller passing by. He was wrapped in a blanket. The wind said, "Whoever makes the man remove the blanket is stronger. Do you agree?"

The sun replied, "OK. You must try first."

The wind started blowing. The traveller wrapped his blanket around him. He blew harder. The traveller held his blanket firmer. He blew still harder. The traveller held his blanket still tighter. The harder the wind blew the tighter and firmer did the traveller hold his blanket. The wind failed.

Now it was the Sun's turn. The sun smiled gently at the traveller. The traveller started feeling warm and the blanket was no good to him. He gently loosened his grip on the blanket. The sun smiled warmly. The traveller felt the warmth and soon took off the blanket.

The sun was declared stronger.

MORAL : Gentle smile can achieve what brutal force can't.

Story 3

The Rotten Apples

In a village on a faraway land, there lived a rich man in a huge mansion. The rich man had a young son who was being raised by him alone as his wife had died years ago.

As a child, the boy was obedient and sincere, and the man was proud of his little boy. However, as he grew older, the boy fell into bad company as the riches and the luxuries had spoilt him. He started smoking and wasting the father’s hard earned money in gambling and on the bad boys whom he called his friends.

The rich man started getting worried about how he could bring his only son to his senses before the boy finished all the wealth or got into fatal trouble.  He thought of a plan. One day, as the boy woke up from his usual long slumber at noon, and sat at the table yelling at the servants to bring him food and drinks, he noticed a rotten apple in the fruit basket. No taking the trouble to throw the rotten fruit, he ate like a glutton and walked out to idle away with his friends.

Now the boy had the habit of not returning home for days. When he home after three days, shabby and cranky demanding food and drinks, he sat at the same table. As he waited for the food to arrive, he saw his father coming into the room and sitting next to him. As he turned away to avoid confrontation with the father, he noticed that the entire basket of apples was not rotten and spreading foul smell all around the dining area.

The boy asked the servants why all the apples were spoilt. To this, the father replied that one rotten apple that he didn’t care to get rid of had spoilt the other apples, just as his bad company was making him useless with every passing day. The boy understood that he had been behaving wrong and felt ashamed of himself. He apologised profusely to his father and promised that he would mend his ways for good.

Story 4

The sadhu and the rat

Once upon a time, in ancient India, there lived a sadhu in a small cottage. The sadhu lived a simple life, meditating and eating a simple meal once a day. One day, as the sadhu sat in penance, a rat named Mooshak came running to him.

“Please help me,” he said to the sadhu, “A cat is chasing me,” he cried, “Please help me so that it cannot recognise me!”

The sadhu took pity on Mooshak and turned it into a cat. Mooshak walked away happily thanking the sadhu for helping him. After a few days, Mooshak came again to the sadhu complaining that because he had turned him into a cat the dogs had started chasing him all the time. The sadhu again felt sorry for Mooshak and turned him into a lion. Mooshak was ecstatic on becoming a magnificent beast and walked off beaming with pride.

One day, as the sadhu sat meditating, he heard noises coming from different directions, all coming towards him. To his surprise, it was the sound of the animals from the forest. The animals complained that a lion was running amok in the forest attacking all creatures at random. The sadhu understood at once who it was and asked the animals to take him to the lion’s den. The sadhu entered the den and came face to face with Mooshak, who couldn’t stop gloating about how he was enjoying bullying everyone now he was the strongest beast in the forest. The sadhu smiled at Mooshak and tried to tell him that what he was doing is wrong. Not paying any heed to the sadhu’s advice, Mooshak sprang on the sadhu to attack him. In a split second, the sadhu turned him back into a rat saying that he should be punished for his deeds.
