Greenwich Meridian

International Date Line

It is a 00 longitude (imaginary line) which passes through the city of Greenwich in Britain

It is an imaginary line which is located 180 degree apart from GMT

In 1884, at meridian conference, 26 countries agreed on a standard or reference IMAGINARY line called prime meridian(Greenwich Mean Time) passing through Great Britain. This was done to avoid confusion and wrong calculations of time

In order to avoid the confusion of having different dates (difference of 24 hours result in the changing of date) in the same country, according to the international agreement, the International Date Line has been outlined. Thus, this line separates days of week in western and eastern hemispheres

It is a straight line

In order to avoid the confusion of having different dates in the same country, the International Date Line bends and goes zig zag at the Bering Strait between Siberia and Alaska, Fiji, Tonga and in some other islands.
