Please explain this paragraph. What this paragraph is trying to say. I am not being able to understand.
During the 19th century in the western countries, the notion of citizenship was intimately attached to the system of rights and obligations which determined the relationship between nation state and the citizens. Equality and freedom implied that an individual have an ability to achieve his/her aspirations to the best of their ability. In such scenarios, social restrictions are minimised or do not exist.
However, the case was different in India as religion and caste were seen as a basis of social life. The colonisers (the British) used the existence of inequalities in India as a result of caste system and thus tried to justify their domination of the country.
