Those reactions in which a substance loses electrons and gets oxidised is called an oxidation reaction.

Example: CaCa2+ + 2e-

Those reactions in which a substance gains electrons and gets reduced is called a reduction reaction.

Example: Ca2+ + 2e-Ca
