If we get real and magnifued image from convex lens, it will be inverted as shown in figure.
If v is lens-to-image distance and u is lens-to-object distance, then we have , v/u = 3
Lens eqn. (1/v) - (1/u) = 1/f becomes [ 1/(3u) ] + 1/u = 1/f or f = (3/4) |u| ....................(1)
( By sign convention u is negative )
after shifting lens by 80 cm towards screen, we have lens-to-object distance is u+80 and lens-to-image distance is v-80
due to diminished image, (v-80)/(u+80) = 1/3 or (3u-80)/(u+80) = 1/3 or u = 40 cm
Hence from eqn.(1), f = (3/4)×40 = 30 cm
