When switch-1 is closed, inductor is connected to battery of emf E through a resistance R.
Energy W stored in Inductor is given by,  W = (1/2)L×i2 .............(1)
L is inductance and i is the current passing through inductance at steady state.
Assuming inductor has negligible resstance, we have,   i = E/R2  ................(2)
from (1) and (2), we write,   begin mathsize 12px style W space equals space 1 half cross times L cross times open parentheses E over R subscript 2 close parentheses squared space space space equals space fraction numerator L cross times E squared over denominator 2 cross times R subscript 2 superscript 2 end fraction end style...................(3)
when switch-2 is closed, stored energy as given in (3) is dissipated in Resistor R1
