Let one pipe alone takes t minutes to fill the tank. hence other one will takealone (t+5) minutes to fill the tank.
Fraction of tank filled by both pipes together =
Time taken by both pipes to fill the full tank = .......................(1)
eqn.(1) is written as, t2 -7t -30 = 0 or (t-10)(t+3) = 0 . Hence acceptable solution for t : t = 10
Hence one pipe alone can fill the tank in 10 minutes. Other one will alone fill the tank in 15 minutes.
