A breakthrough in the development of the periodic table came with the work of the Russian chemist Dmotri Mendeleev and the German chemist J. Lother Meyer.
Working independently, both the scientists in 1869 proposed that when the elements are arranged in the increasing order of their atomic weights, similarities in physical and chemical properties appear at regular intervals. The results published by both were very similar.
