1.What impression do you get of Hugie's personality through the author's description of him in the opening paragraph of the story? What else do you learn about him by the end of the story?

The protagonist, Hughie Erskine, as described by the author, is wonderfully good-looking, with his crisp brown hair, his clear-cut profile, and his grey eyes; equally popular with men and women thanks to his sparkling personality. The only thing he struggled with was money. He was not aware that it is better to have a permannent income than to be fascinating; the truths of modern life. Through the opening paragraph, we think that Hughie is all looks and does not care about making a living on his own, inspite of being in a relationship with a girl, Laura Merton.
We find out toward the end that Hughie, despite his unfortunate financial circumstances, is of philanthropic nature and is generous with what he does have. He is moved to pity by the sight of an elderly beggar who is posing as a model for his artist friend and gives him money and thinks about offering the man some of his own clothing to replace his rags. So, he is more than just his good looks. The young man's act of kindness has unexpected positive consequences for him.
Hughie also shows a bit of pride and humility when he is eventually exposed as having given money to one of the wealthiest men in Europe.
