- In the ancient period, the mahajanpads were the powerful kingdoms. While some were monarchial, others were republican in nature.
- Today, we have a democratic form of the government where people elect their own representatives.
- No, I do not agree that our state is a kind mahajanpad. It is because most of mahajanpads had monarchical form of the government where the position of the king was hereditary.
- Our state is also not a kind of republic mahajapad (where the king was elected) that existed in the ancient period. It is because in the republican mahajanpad, also known as the ‘gana’ or ‘sangha’, only the members of the upper class voted to elect their king. Today, every citizen has the voting rights to elect their own government.
