CBSE Class 11-science Answered

on a two line road, car A is travelling with a speed of 36 km/h two cars B and C approach car A in opposite directions with a speed of 54 km/h each. at a certain instant, when the distance AB=AC both being 1km B decides to overtake A before C does.what minimum acceleration of car B is required to avoid an accident?

First let us calculate the time taken by car-C to meet car-A.

relative speed of car-C related to car-A = 10+15 = 25 m/s
time = distance/relative-speed = 1000/25 = 40 s.

hence in 40 s car-B should cross car-A

relative velocity of car-B related to car-A = 15-10 = 5 m/s

required acceleration is obtained from the relation " S = ut+(1/2)at2 ", where S is dtstance travelled,
u is initial speed, a is acceleration and t is time taken to travel the distance S

1000 = 5×40 + (1/2)×a×40×40  ....................(1)

from the above equation, we get mimimum acceleration a = 1 m/s2
