There are various ways in which variations can arise in sexually reproducing organisms. These are due to errors in DNA copying, crossing over resulting in new gene recombinations, independent inheritance of traits in the gametes and random fusion of gametes. In asexual repoduction, variations are minor and arise due to inaccuracies in DNA copying mechanism. The greater number of variations in sexually reproducing organisms gives them different advantages in various situations and also provides them with better chances of survival. Thus they can evolve in various ways depending on the environment and need.
